Framed Initial
I've been in a crafting mood the last few weeks just enjoying making little things for the house and sprucing things up around here.
We have this cover for what I guess was a old stovepipe or something over the fireplace which isn't the most attractive decoration ever but is kind of the centerpiece of the room, regardless. I've gotten in the habit of covering it with seasonal decorations and found it looks a whole lot better and adds another little spot for something decorative. For Thanksgiving, a wooden turkey covered the eyesore and for Christmas, stockings.
So when I took the Christmas decorations down around New Year's, my thoughts immediately turned to what could be hung there. I tried several pictures but nothing was quite right.
I then remembered this cute framed initial idea that I had bookmarked a little while back. This would be perfect! I love monograms and initials so I thought framing a 'C' (for our last name) would be really cute for that spot.
First, I had to find a frame that was the right size. I put it on my thrift store list and looked the next time I was out thrifting. On my second trip, I found just what I was looking for. A wooden frame for an 8 x 10 picture. A plus was that this frame looked brand-new and was already black which was the color I was going to paint the frame. And it was only $2! Plus it came with a mat that I can use for another project!
I was determined to only use fabric from what I had on hand so I rummaged through and came up with a combination I liked. The tan linen was a thrifted skirt bought for sewing projects and while I was working, I remembered that the red check fabric was a yard sale find a while back. Not bad!!! I already had a roll of Heat-n-Bond on hand so the frame was the only item I needed to buy.
This was a really quick and easy craft. Finding a font and adjusting it to the right size was the hardest part! The letter 'C' can be funny to find just right, some were too skinny and others looked too plain or like I was teaching kindergarten printing. I printed off one I liked, then adjusted it a bit by cutting some parts a bit wider.
So fun!

This whole project was done in less than 30 minutes. I love it and can see many more of these types of projects in the near future. I think it'd be cute using scrapbook paper instead of fabric, too. Or with whole words instead of just letters. So fun!

If you live near an Earth Fare store, located in SC, NC, TN and GA, you can get a free pound of cooked shrimp with coupon this week. Go here for details!
I just came back from getting my free pound; a $9.99 value!!! I don't know about you but shrimp is a great treat in our household!
I'm loving the freebies from Earth Fare the past few weeks: a 3 pound bag of organic apples, 1 pound of fresh cranberries and now, a free pound of shrimp!
Thank you, Earth Fare!

Harris Teeter Triples Trip!
Harris Teeter is running another triple coupon event starting today!
So this morning, I went out tripling. Tripling. It should be an Olympic sport.
I still needed to organize some of my coupons so instead of going first thing, I got up and cooked breakfast and got a few things done around the house, and then sat down to quickly pull and organize the coupons I thought I might use.
I've gotten so behind on clipping and organizing my coupons in the binder method, that I've decided to try keeping the whole inserts and then just clip when I need it. I can see that there are a few disadvantages to this system but so far, I'm liking it. It saves so much time!
Anyways, I went through the inserts, clipping the coupons I wanted and then organized them in my binder to take to the store. That way, I could go down aisles with my binder open to the appropriate page and see immediately if there was something that might be a good deal.
This took me less than 30 minutes and I was on my way!
There were already some items that were cleaned off the shelves. No Heinz Ketchup or Scrubbing Bubbles in the sizes and prices to make a great coupon deal! But overall, I think I did pretty good.
I scored some marked down organic chicken and also some marked down organic mushrooms. Yum! So that added $8 to my total.
Most items were free or nearly free, but a few things like the chocolate chips were a really good price with the sale and coupon. $1 a bag! And I need chocolate chips. Yes, I do.
Now is the time to be thinking ahead for holiday baking. Baking supplies are starting to go on sale and there are many coupons out there, too.
My total before coupons was $49.37.
I paid $15.44 for everything in the picture below.
Not my best trip ever, but considering that I still saved roughly 70%, I think I did very good!
Plus I got things we really needed and buy regularly, like organic chicken, baking powder, pepperoni and chocolate chips.

A Couple Great Deals At Food Lion
I'm slow in the blogging department today after a busy weekend of our anniversary, a yard sale and being gone most of the day yesterday.
To add to my slowness, I fell while running yesterday morning. Thankfully, I'm fine- just a little sore and scratched up!
Anyways, I did want to let my readers know about a couple of good deals at Food Lion right now. These deals are only good through tomorrow(Tuesday, the 6th).
--Boneless, skinless chicken breasts: $1.79 pound.
--10 pound bag Russet potatoes: $1.99 each.
$2 or under for chicken breast is always a good deal and I think that the price on potatoes could very possibly be the lowest of the season(barring Thanksgiving, maybe.)
I bought 4 bags of potatoes today. Why, you ask? Well, it's a really low price ( regular price is $6.99 a bag!) and potatoes will last a while if stored properly.
One 10 pound bag will make enough mashed potatoes to fill my crockpot. $1.99 (plus milk, butter and salt) is a great price for a side dish that will feed a crowd for our Sunday potlucks!

No Super Doubles
I just discovered through forum and blog reading that apparently, Harris Teeter is NOT running a Super Doubles coupon event this week(9/30-10/6).
Since I had mentioned that it was coming up in this post, I wanted to clarify just in case someone read that bit of info and was planning to run to Harris Teeter early on Wednesday!
I love a good coupon sale but my shelves are pretty well-stocked, so I may just take the week off from grocery shopping!

Weekly Grocery Trip
This week's shopping was done at Bi-Lo, Harris Teeter, Target and a small produce stand.
I didn't get a picture of my Bi-Lo trip. Here's what I got:
--2 Chi-Chi's tortillas B1G1 at $1.69
--1 bag of Great Northern beans-$1.35
--2 boxes Surf detergent B1G1 at $5.48. Used 2 $.75/1 Q's that doubled and made the final price- $1.24 each.
--1 package pork chops on sale for $1.69 pound: $4.68
--2 Carolina Pride smoked sausage B1 G1 at $3.49. Used $1.50/1 Q to make them $.99 each.
--Bag of bananas- $1.49
Bi-Lo total: $14.05

Harris Teeter's Triple Coupon sale started Wednesday. I got everything pictured for $2.96! You can read more details here.

I know I said in last week's grocery post that I was going to take a break from Target. But they had a great deal on Kashi cereal that used only manufacturer's coupons and no store coupons, so I decided to make a quick trip. I used a FREE coupon and 3 $1.50/1 Honey Sunshine coupons from the Vocalpoint mailer and another $2/1 Kashi coupon that I received with a sample.
Total was $5.11.
Paid with $5 gift card.
Total OOP cost: $.11, plus I earned another $5 gift card to use next time!
Between this week and last week's deals and some other great cereal deals in the past couple of months, we are very well-stocked on cereal! Cereal is also a good thing to donate to food pantries since it can be eaten dry or with milk and does not need to be heated.
Breakdown:
Bi-Lo: $14.05
Harris Teeter: $2.96
Target: $.11
Produce Stand for a butternut squash and 5 sweet potatoes: $2.50
Total spent this week: $19.62
I came in $5.38 under budget which I will either use next week or put aside for future bulk purchases.

Harris Teeter Triples
It's triple coupon time at Harris Teeter this week! There are many good deals to be found this time around, so if you have a Harris Teeter store nearby, I'd recommend that you make a trip!
And take your coupon box with you-they're tripling manufacturer's coupons up to $.99 face value!
My trip this morning was quite profitable-I got all that's pictured for $2.96! Before coupons, my total was just over $40!
So as not to reinvent the wheel, I won't be making a complete list of what coupons I used and exactly how much everything cost. Southern Savers and Coupon Teacher have already done that for us!
Unless there is a screaming good deal otherwise, for a triples trip, I focus solely on using coupons that are less than $1 face value. I then look for items that will be free or nearly free or things that I really need and would be less expensive bought with a triple coupon than the everyday price with only a doubled coupon(since Harris Teeter doubles up to $.99 every day).
For this trip, I was really looking for pasta and brown rice since I was almost out of both. I also had a number of Barilla pasta and various rice coupons to use.
All of the pasta was FREE or $.10 each and the various rice packets/boxes were all FREE. I paid $.94 a bag for the Mahatma rice since that was a really good deal for something I would buy anyways! I paid $.74 cents for 3 organic apples that were on the marked down rack and I believe the other items were FREE!
I still have gobs of coupons I could use, since I didn't really get very far out of the pasta and rice aisle today, so I may make another trip or two during this sale. There is a limit of 20 coupons per customer per day and since we want Harris Teeter to continue offering these great coupon events, I feel we should do our best to play by the rules! (Also, I think that the number of coupons you use is linked to your VIC card so the computer will not triple anymore than that.)
Happy Shopping!
And if you've already been to the triple coupon sale, let us know how you did in the comments section!

Weekly Grocery Trip
Alternate title: Lots of FREE Dog Food!
Welcome to another weekly breakdown of my grocery shopping trips!
My hope in sharing this each week is that you will be able to snag some of these same deals! I know that because of the sales cycles of most grocery stores, some of these deals may already be over by the time Saturday rolls around. But others are still going. I find out about most of these deals from Southern Savers and Money Saving Mom. What's not to love? They do most of the brain work for me. And for that, I am thankful!

I got all of this at Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter for $12.36! The only items that were not sale-priced were the flour and kidney beans.
Highlights of this trip:
--5- (1.5 lb.) bags of Chef Michael's dog food on sale for $3 each. Used 5-$3/1 coupons to get these for FREE!
--3 cans Mighty Dog. Used 3- FREE coupons.
--Pillsbury "canned' biscuits- Used recent $1/1 printables to get these for $.25 each.
--Cantaloupe- $.99 each
--Apples- $.79 a pound.
--2 boxes Reynold's foil- $.22 each
--Corn- $.20 ear
--Bag of bananas- $1.00
--Eggs- $.99 a dozen
--Mushrooms-marked down to $1.25
Later in the week I made a trip to Target to use my $5 gift card from last week and roll over another deal. Last week's trip went so smoothly that I was excited about this trip. However...
The cashier rang up all my purchases. When she saw my coupons, she wouldn't even start scanning them. She got all flustered and called for help. I think she was put off by the B1G1 dog food coupons on the top of the stack. So another cashier came over and started scanning them. All of the coupons went through fine except 5 of the store coupons. She explained that if they do not scan they cannot take them. Ok, that's fine. Then she said that I can only use one of the store coupons per item per transaction but that she would let it go this time. Again, I'm good with that. The store coupons do state, "one per transaction" and I will try to honor that from now on. (This is the first time I've had trouble with that.)
Then she went away(back to her own register) and cashier #1 took over again. I said I wanted to take 4 string cheese and 6 of the dog foods off my order because the coupons did not go through. She said she couldn't do that because of the coupons. So I was polite. I paid($5 more than I had planned) and left and then went to Customer Service to try to return those items. If I had it to do over again, I would've kept the cheese and just returned the dog food as she put stickers on the cheese, which I'm pretty sure means that they couldn't go back onto the shelf. I felt really badly about that! So she gave me the money back-more than I had spent for those items- because it doesn't take into account the manufacturers coupons that I used which the store will get reimbursed for.
I came home so confused and not sure what I really spent. I felt like I had somehow robbed the store and I hate feeling that way. I went over it all and I did not do anything wrong, but still... I think I'll take a break from Target for a couple of weeks.

After all that trouble, here's what I got:
--5 boxes Fiber One cereal at $2.50 each ( Buy 5 Fiber one products, get a $5 gift card.)Used 3 $.75/1, 1 $1/2 manu. coupons and stacked with 5 $1/1 store coupons:$4.25.
--8 string cheese at $.40 cents each- Used 4 $1/2 store coupons. (Register automatically only took $.80 cents off for each coupon):FREE.
--2 Chef Michael's canned foods- $.84 each. Used B1G1 manu. coupon stacked with B1G1 store coupons: FREE.
When it was all said and done, I guess I did not really pay anything out of pocket as I used my gift card from last week, plus I got another $5 gift card to use next time. So I did very well considering!

I also made my monthly pilgrimage to Sam's Club this week and stocked up on cheeses, sour cream, cottage cheese, some spices, tortilla chips and a big bag of white fish. I spent $60.12. With care, the cheese and sour cream should last us about a month and a half.
Breakdown of all purchases this week:
--Aldi(for sour cream)- $.90
--Dairy (for raw milk)- $6
--Walmart(for Blue Bunny frozen yogurt treat)-$3. 54 (Will send in for full rebate as part of a Labor Day weekend promotion.)
--Bi-Lo-$4.00
--Harris Teeter-$8.36
Weekly grocery total: $22.80
--Sam's Club-$60.12
Total spent this week: $82.92
Did you find any great deals this week? Please tell us about it!

Super Savings Saturday: Weekly Grocery Trip
I've been out of the groove with my grocery shopping these last two weeks. Last week was way too busy and I just didn't have the time. This week was hectic trying to catch up from last week so I only did a couple of quick trips rather than actual grocery shopping.
That's the great thing about eating from our pantry. Other than fresh produce and dairy, we usually have a nice supply of basic foods on hand. So if I don't get out to shop, it isn't that much of a crisis.
In the past two weeks, I've made quick trips to Walgreens, CVS, Target, Bi-Lo and Earth Fare. The picture below shows what I got at Target this week!

Highlights:
Target: See deals and coupons used here.
--4 bags of Chef Michael's dog food: FREE
--5 containers of Edy's ice cream: $.50 each after coupons and gift card
--2 Johnson's Buddies soaps: FREE
--2 Gerber baby bottles: FREE
--4 trial size Tide and All detergent: FREE
Bi-Lo:
--4 bags of Chef Michael's dog food, on sale for 2/$6. Used $3/1 coupon to make these FREE!
Breakdown:
Target: $7.54(Received $5 gift card so actual cost of items pictured was $2.54!!)
Bi-Lo: $.84
Earth Fare(eggs and sweeteners): $7.38
CVS(used expiring ECB's to buy hair gel and Scrubbing Bubbles): $1.51
Walgreens( last week's trip to buy sale priced canned salmon and deodorant):$5.24
Total: $22.51
Some friends of ours went out of town for the weekend and gave us 2 big bags of produce! This included organic lettuce and salad greens, spinach, tomatoes, lots of peppers, baby carrots and apples. What a blessing!
What kind of deals have you found lately?

Super Savings Saturday: Weekly Grocery Trip
The deals didn't seem to be that plentiful this week and I was low on time and energy. Besides that,I was running low on some of the basics!
I shopped at Bi-Lo and Aldi this week. I used 7 coupons total. After last week's triple coupons, that seemed like not very many coupons! But I got what I needed at great prices and that's what matters.

Highlights:
--Breyer's yogurt on sale for $.50 each. Used a printable $1/2 any Breyer's product coupon to make them FREE!
--Fresh Express salad marked down to $.99.
--Bag o' Bananas marked at $1.49. I regularly purchase bags of marked down bananas for $1.49(usually about 6 lbs.) instead of paying $.65 or more a pound. My Bi-Lo often has these in the mornings, and some of the bananas are still green.
--FREE Suave body wash. Bi-Lo is running a deal where you buy 3 Suave products and get a coupon for a FREE Suave product. I bought 3 body wash at $1.99 each, used 3 $.50/1 coupons. Since the coupons doubled, each bottle cost $.99. I got my FREE coupon at the register and the manager asked if I would like her to go get me another one so I could use the coupon right away, since no one else was in line in the whole store. :-)So I got 4 bottles of body wash for $2.97 or $.74 each. A great deal! My husband will be smelling of Ocean Breeze scent for a while!:-)
What I spent:
--Bi-Lo: $11.27
--Aldi: $10.99
--Bread Outlet earlier in week: $2.00
Grand total for week: $24.26
Note: This is not all I spend on groceries. My grocery budget is broken into different categories: a Sam's Club/Costco trip, local grass-fed beef, bulk items such as wheat berries, money for drugstore shopping, buying the Sunday paper for coupons, etc. Right now that leaves me with about $25 a week for general grocery shopping which doesn't sound like a lot but really works out pretty well considering that most of our meat and many bulk items such as spices, olive oil and large amounts of cheese are being purchased out of the other categories. I also work on keeping a well-stocked pantry and freezer which I plan my meals from each week. This works for me right now!

My Birthday
Even though my birthday was almost a month ago, I thought I'd let you have a peek into the celebration! I've had this post and the pictures hanging around so I wanted to go ahead and get this up.
We like to keep things pretty simple around here and that includes birthdays! We give small gifts to each other and budget for a nice meal out. We do make a big deal about making the birthday person feel special and celebrated, though!
Over the past few years, we've signed up for various birthday freebies from local restaurants. This makes our birthday week really fun as we use the various FREE coupons that are emailed to us.
My husband took me out for a nice dinner to Longhorn Steakhouse a couple of days before my birthday. (I had a coupon that was expiring!) The day of my birthday, he gave me the gifts he had picked out. In addition to this gift, he also gave me a sweet flower necklace that I love and have been wearing almost daily. (You can see the necklace in the picture below.)
One of the boys I babysit showed up with this bouquet of flowers. How sweet!

His mom also surprised me with a bag filled with lunch for us!

She had made ham and asparagus lasagna, salad with fresh strawberries and nuts and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing, bread, and delicious brownie cupcakes for dessert! I was blown away by her thoughtfulness.

For supper, we went to McAlister's deli and used my $5 coupon they had sent me. In years past, we would share a big nacho plate that was priced at a little over $5. This year, however,I really wanted a chicken and basil panini so I got that with my coupon.

After supper, we went to Cold Stone Creamery and used my birthday coupon for a FREE "Like It"(their small size) cup of ice cream. I chose dark chocolate ice cream with Reese's peanut butter cups mixed in which we shared. It was beyond delicious!

What a picture! Not sure if I look scared or scary! haha
In addition, I had many birthday emails and phone calls. My favorites were my nephew calling to sing "Happy Birthday" and also birthday wishes via phone by the other little one that I babysit who was not at my house that day. A friend called and wanted to take me out for supper the next day, too!
Needless to say, I felt so loved and my birthday was very special! Birthdays like these make heading into my mid-thirties not seem quite so bad!:-)

Creative Advertising
I laughed so hard when we saw this sign while driving to the church picnic on Saturday. Certainly an attention getter!

Followed by this one:

This sign was posted about 3 miles from the sale! Fortunately we were headed out that way so we stopped to see what they had. They had lots of stuff and certainly great prices although I only bought one small item.
The signs were still up the next day so I had to stop and take pictures! I got lots of funny looks from people in the cars stopped at the light. But, oh well, it's worth it for blog fodder!
This is almost as good as the yard sale ad we saw in the newspaper the other week: Come early, bring your truck!

Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Kitchen Scale
Recently, I picked up a small kitchen scale at a yard sale. I had never seen one like this and almost didn't pick it up to see what it was!
I knew I would want to buy one eventually. It's just a nice addition to my kitchen. I use it to weigh fruits and veggies when recipes call for pounds and ounces. I use it to weigh some of the food I eat. "How big is an ounce of cheese, anyways?" I use it to weigh balls of bread dough to make more uniform loaves of homemade bread. It's much more exact than eyeballing everything. And it's so compact and comes with a lid(not pictured) that it fits right in my cupboard.
I'm sure as time goes on, I'll think of even more things to weigh on my little scale!
So that's my kitchen tip for today. Use a kitchen scale! Or at least, if you think you might use one, start looking for one at yard sales!

Yard Sale Deals
I haven't shared any of my yard sale finds in a while. But I found a couple of cool things this weekend that are worth sharing!
My husband found this in a FREE box:

It's a vintage 1950's Pyrex bowl complete with lid! I love the red. I love old bowls. The lid shows a bit of wear but still, I can't believe it was free!
I love the looks of Vera Bradley products but not the price so much. So I keep my eye out for these things at yard sales. I've found that if they're in really good condition, they're priced pretty high. If they're cheap, they're pretty worn. But occasionally, I'll find a Vera in the $1 purse box. In the past year or two, I've purchased an almost brand new Vera purse that I sold on ebay and a slightly worn Vera tote bag that I use and love! Both were $1.
This past Saturday, I found this for $1:

A Vera Bradley "Ditty Bag". It is just so pretty! I know I'll enjoy using it. Wouldn't this be a charming way to carry my lunch?

Free Food- Not For Chikins!
What do we do for fun on a Friday night?
Dress up like cows and get a free meal!
Today was Chick-fil-a's Cow Appreciation Day and they were handing out free food to people dressed like cows. For wearing a cow accessory, you got a free entree and if you were dressed head to toe like a cow, a free meal.
We figured that if we were going to do it, we might as well do it right and get the whole meal! And we love Chick-Fil-A!

Our costumes were created using only stuff we had on hand:
--black fabric for the spots, ears and my tail
--Chick-Fil-A tie for Andy's tail
--bandana
--cardstock, markers and some recycled twine for my sign
--sewing thread, needle and tape
--our regular clothes-white shirts and khakis(closest thing we had to white pants!)
**No clothes were harmed in the making of these costumes!:-)
Thank you, Chick-Fil-A for a fun and free date night!

More Than Free Cheese and Very Cheap Waffles
I don't often shop at Harris Teeter but went this morning all geared up for their Super Double Coupon sale. Well, it doesn't start until tomorrow as I found out as soon as I got inside the store!! Since I was there anyways, I went ahead and looked at a few of the coupon deals, checking prices and such and then remembered this sweet cheese sale.
Kraft Cheese was on sale for $1.47 a bag. I had $.50/1 coupons from the little coupon dispensers/blinkies in the store.
Harris Teeter doubles coupons $.99 and under. So I got $1 off each bag of cheese, bringing the price per package to $.47 each. That is still pretty good but not the best part!
Kraft is running a promotion through July 12 at different stores where you get a catalina coupon (These are the coupons that spit out with your receipt.)good on your next order at checkout.
I bought 5 packages of cheese and paid $2.40. Because I purchased 5, a catalina coupon printed at the register for $4 to be used on my next Harris Teeter shopping trip!
The cheese was free plus I made $1.60 on this shopping trip!
Note: I personally really don't care all that much for pre-shredded cheese. Kraft is better than some brands, but I don't think it tastes quite the same or melts like cheese I shred myself. But for free, I'll deal with it! It will come in handy and shredded cheese keep well in the freezer, too.
This is the last day for the Harris Teeter sale on the cheese. But the catalina promotion continues through July 12. (I think that these can be done numerous times, too.)Starting tomorrow, the cheese is $2 a package and can still be a sweet deal if you're able to print these coupons.
Maybe some of you will be able to stock up on inexpensive cheese, too!
This deal has been going on for awhile, but is worth mentioning.
Super Target has some flavors of Kashi waffles on price cut for $1.79. A recent Vocalpoint mailer supplied me with five $1.50/1 coupons. I got all of these waffles for $.29 or a little less each(some were marked even lower). It turned out that all five boxes cost me about the same as one regular priced boxes! Money Saving Mom has the scoop here: scroll down to see details on the Kashi deal.
Again, I prefer to make waffles from scratch but I can't beat this price! I haven't tried any yet but my sister says that the blueberry variety are delicious!

Triple Coupon Weekend at Bloom!
Bloom stores are running their triple coupon sales this weekend. If you have a Bloom near you, there are many great deals to be had. Lots of free or nearly free items this time around. Southern Savers has some coupon match-ups here.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to go this morning but Andy encouraged me to go. My excuse was that I only had $13 of grocery money left and I still needed milk, eggs and produce. (Never fear, my pantry and freezer are well-stocked with about everything else!)

I got all of this(nearly $100 worth of groceries) in two transactions for a grand total of $5.27 ! This included eggs, some fruit and frozen veggies that we needed. My second transaction ended up being negative so I added the two packs of Orbit gum to bring my total up to $.34. Now that's what I'm talking about!
I still have money leftover for milk and a few other items. God is good!

See how excited the dog was over my great triple coupon haul! Hmmmm....not so much!!!
