The Unexpected

As I posted here, Andy had surgery on March 3rd to remove a tumor.

We have since found out that the tumor was malignant, as the doctor expected. A CT scan was ordered and when the results came back, we were told that unfortunately the cancer had spread some beyond the initial area. Because of this, chemo is necessary.

Beginning on April 10th, Andy will undergo three 3-week cycles of chemotherapy. Nine consecutive weeks in total. After chemo is complete, he will have surgery to remove some cancerous lymph glands.

The good news is that the cancer is very treatable and a full recovery is expected. There is an 85% or higher cure rate for this specific type of cancer.

The bad news is that chemo is rough! The side effects of chemo are not fun. But the advantages of chemo definitely outweigh the cancer being left to itself to grow and spread. We are praying that the side effects will be minimal.

I continue to meditate on Jeremiah 29:11.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

In looking at 2017, I wouldn't have ever imagined that cancer would be a part of our year. But it doesn't surprise God. He already knew and has every thing we need in place.

Please pray for our family as we walk this journey. Thank you!

I will update as I can.

I started to write an e-mail to you last night then Megan came out of bed and I never went back to it. I went onto facebook to see a cousins new baby and saw the video that Andy had posted. This really stinks!! I loved Andy's attitude and I am sure that will be a huge help as he goes through this. I have been through this twice with my mom for breast cancer. The most recent time being last fall. Chemo is not only hard on the one going through it but also hard for the ones that love that person. I will be lifting you both in prayer. I know I am far away, but if there anyway I can encourage you, please let me know.

Yes to what Wendi said!! I have found myself numerous times this year reminding myself that God is not surprised - that He knew/knows what we would encounter this year. A sweet friend from church always says, "God is so previous" - He is there before I am and that is such a comfort! Love to you, friend.

I will add Andy to my prayer list. I am a cancer survivor and know how important prayers can be!
The things that helped me with side effects of chemo:
- acupuncture before and after chemo (sometimes it was the same day, sometimes it was the day before and the day after)
- eating small pieces of crystallized ginger helped with nausea
- eating light but tolerable "personal comfort foods" when I was not hungry but knew I had to eat something (I ate a lot of pretzels, string cheese and Sprite)
