This week for Works For Me Wednesday, it's Backwards Day! Instead of giving a great idea,we are asking for answers/ideas/advice for a specific question we may have.
My question is this:
I buy Tupperware at yard sales and thrift stores. Much of it, especially the older styles, has a musty smell inside. The smell doesn't go away after repeated baths in the dishwasher either. I know I'm not the only one who buys used Tupperware. How can I get rid of the smell?
Put the Tupperware in the sink and fill it with hot hot hot water and a little bit of household bleach and let them sit like that all day. Just don't forget there's BLEACH in them, like I did recently.
ReplyDeleteBy "it" I mean each individual piece of tupperware, not the sink. Fill the Tupperware with water and bleach. Sorry.

ReplyDeleteLemon juice and baking soda work quite well. You would have to do it for each individual tupperware item, but the smell should go away.
Baking soda is a natural deodorizer.

i think there's also a tube of stuff you can add to your dishwasher that will clean your tuperware containers. it's red with green lettering? i used it once when i had a ton of containers to clean and it worked pretty well. found it in the section with the cleaners and soaps.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried putting a bunch of vinegar in it and letting it sit a while. I know vinegar absorbs bad smells.

ReplyDeleteI would try baking soda as that generally works for me with kitchen smells :)
Peroxide works well too, and isn't as hazardous as bleach. I too know the Opps, that had bleach in it boo boos.
ReplyDeleteI have some old Tupperware pitchers that my mom passed on to me. They taint the drinks stored in them with a faint plastic taste. I asked a Tupperware lady about that, and she suggested I clean them well with baking soda. I haven't tried it yet, but that's the advice I was given straight from a Tupperware rep.
ReplyDeleteCrushed newspapers dowsed in vinegar - put the lid on and let side overnight at least - then wash as usual.
